Gogen "The Cat" Yamaguchi - Goju Ryu Karate
by Don Warrener
The Emperor of the Scarlet Fist
Gogen Yamaguchi, "The Cat", was one of the most charismatic, talented and fascinating martial artists of all time.
Born before the Second World War, he was able to train with one of the best martial artists: Chojun Miyagi. His training under the master was brief, but his skills enabled him to learn and retain so much from Miyagi that he became the head of the Japanese Goju in 1959 at the request of the founder.
Yamaguchi Sensei made a truly magnificent picture as he walked down Broadway in New York with his long, flowing hair, his fondness for traditional Japanese dress and a sword in his hand.
Gogen Yamaguchi embodied his role with every fibre of his being and was a true karate master of the highest order.
