In martial arts disciplines (Budo) the belt (Obi) is a part of the suit and its colour shows the degree of progress.
Later people used also other colours, but today in Japan there aren´t used so many colours like in western countries. The colours exist to make possible to consider the fighter´s skills. So the master could classify his pupils as belonging to different groups and exercises. In der westlichen Welt wurden später noch mehr Farben eingeführt, um als Motivation zu dienen und dem Schüler zu zeigen, dass auch kleine Fortschritte ihn weiterbringen.
Ein Kampfsportgürtel wird traditionellerweise nicht gewaschen, da dies von der Auffassung kommt, dass sich die Erfahrung des Kämpfers sich im Gürtel sammelt und durch das Waschen schwindet. Um einen Gürtel weicher zu machen, rollt man diesen immer wieder von allen Seiten zusammen.

The martial arts belt consists of cotton, mixture or silk. Normally, the width is 4 cm or more; it depends en the kind of martial arts. The length depends on the body size and also en the kind of martial arts (Mostly karate is longer and judo is shorter).Binding method
