The Okinawa style of oar is called Eku (this actually refers to the local wood most commonly used for oars), Eiku, Iyeku or Ieku. Notable trademarks are the slight point at the tip, the bend to one side of the paddle and a roof-like ridge along the other. One of the basic features of this weapon utilises the fact that a fisherman fighting on the beach is able to hurl sand at an opponent. Although they do not have the length and therefore range of the bo, the rather sharp edges can do more penetrating damage if used correctly. The Eku techniques are the same as the Bo s - but it requires much more skill to allow the wrist to rotate to use the correct part of the weapon.
